Class Notes for T.C.T. - Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales

Medieval Literature, p28-32

William the Conqueror

Henry II

Richard I (Richard the Lion-Hearted)

King John + Robin Hood Lore. He was forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. The Magna Carta is the precursor for the US Constitution.

Henry VII (Tudor from Lancaster) defeated Richard III (from York) in the War of the Roses to become king of England. Richard III is an important Shakespearean History play

Feudalism

The Church – owned 25% of the land in England and held lots of power

Chivalry, Courtly Love

King Arthur and the Crusades

Geoffrey Chaucer – he was the first to write in REAL English, not Latin or French. He brought literature to the people. Literature was no longer just for the elite nobility, who could read Latin and French

The Canterbury Tales – These are written like a FRAME STORY (a series of short stories with different narrators). His story is based on Boccaccio’s DECAMERON, but the Decameron was only composed of nobility telling stories. The Canterbury Tales is the first work of literature written in English. This was revolutionary, since most literature had been only written in Latin and French, the language of a privileged few.

Bubonic Plague + Society - The Plague killed 1/3 of England and Europe. Because of a great reduction in population, the lower classes and their products became very important. Hence, the nobility could no longer take the lower classes for granted. The lower classes could charge more money for their products. Since they had more money, they could afford to educate themselves and their children. So, the lower classes became an empowered Middle Class of people; the nobility couldn’t manipulate and control the lower classes any longer. Chaucer’s family comes from one of these new middle-class families. He wrote The Canterbury Tales in English (the people’s language).

Chaucer was Middle-Class, but he was very wealthy, and he married “well.” He worked for the nobility, and he married the Queen’s Lady in Waiting (she was his patron’s sister in law). While he was middle class, he was VERY well connected and wealthy, like the governor of Texas or a famous actor/athlete might be.

The story is written in IAMBIC PENTAMETER (most works in English are, really) - A metrical pattern in poetry which consists of five iambic feet per line. An iamb, or iambic foot, consists of one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable

The General Prologue p144-166

Characters – how each person LOOKS is an reference to their INTERNAL CHARACTER
Narrator – unnamed, likely male
Knight – very chivalric. He’s honorable and religious. He’s fought in many foreign wars in the name of Christianity. He’s come home to England and immediately wants to go to Canterbury for a pilgrimage. He’s got a gentle disposition; he’s neither rough nor crude.
Squire – The Knight’s son, about 20 years old, very talented (artistic and athletic), good natured, happy-go-lucky, loves his lady, he serves his father well.
Yeoman – servant of the Knight. He’s basically ROBIN HOOD. He wears a green hood and coat, has the best arrows and bow. He also has an arm-guard, dagger, sword, and shield. Most likely, he hunts for the Knight and Squire
Prioress (nun, abbess, mother superior). She doesn’t act like a typical nun; she acts more like a married noble-woman. She speaks French, but school-French, not real French as was spoken in Paris (i.e. she pretends to be what she’s not). She has very fancy manners, especially table manners. She can sing very well. She is also an animal lover, but she is too extreme in her love of animals. She is quite attractive, and she carries a fancy brooch with her (Love can conquer all). These last two elements especially, are thought of as atypical for a nun.
A nun and 3 Priests – these are traveling with the Prioress, but they aren’t described.
Monk – there is a monk who likes to hunt. He has several fine horses, and his saddle and bridle are very fine. He also has very fine boots. He doesn’t see why he has to bend over books or toil in a garden all day to be a monk. He thinks that monks should be able to be out-doorsy people who enjoy life. He is also overweight, which shows that he enjoys the pleasures in life, like fine foods. The narrator thinks that this monk’s view on life is good and interesting.
Friar – The Friar walks from town to town, bringing the word of God. Although he is good natured about his business, he has no problem taking monetary donations from even the poorest person who hears him speak the Gospel. Also, he doesn’t lead the purest life; he liked to sweet-talk with various women (and he even gave these women presents). If someone confessed a sin to him, he gave them a very easy penance (too easy). He didn’t try hard to reform sinners. He knew the barmaids better than the sick and the poor. He only went to places that were fun and profitable.
Merchant – He has a forked beard, which may give clue to his bad character. He is in financial debt (which is seen as a terrible thing), and he tries to hide his debt (although the narrator knows about it). This is ironic, because he is overly concerned about money and financial dealings (as well as border security).
Oxford Cleric – the Cleric is much too obsessed with learning and studying, to the point that he neglects all other obligations in his life. His horse is thin, he is thin, and his clothes are thin. He doesn’t have a paying job, nor is he worldly enough to have one really, but he is always asking people for money so that he can keep buying books and going to school. He doesn’t do anything lively, like play an instrument, nor does he speak much with people. His single-mindedness in study is a great failing of his.
Sergeant at Law – This man is very business like. There seems to nothing positive or negative about him; there is a matter-of-fact description of him. He knows every law and can capably comment on laws. He is the antithesis (opposite of) the Oxford Cleric, in that he has used his education well (he’s made a living with his education).
Franklin – He accompanies the Sergeant at Law. This man is a gourmand (a foodie). He liked nothing better than good food and hospitality. All he wanted was the best foods and a nice place to entertain friends. He had been a sheriff, county auditor; and he was a landowner.
Haberdasher, Dyer, Carpenter, Weaver, Carpet-Maker – These people are all described as one; they are all dressed the same. Each man was an alderman, had enough property and income, and they went into church first on feast days (like the Wife of Bath), since they had achieved a high station in life.
Cook – Accompanies the Haberdasher, Dyer, Carpenter, Weaver, Carpet-Maker. This cook is very skilled and has detailed knowledge of many specific foods. He has an ulcer on his skin.
Skipper – This sea captain is widely traveled. He wore rough clothing, and didn’t worry overly much about outward appearances. He is portrayed in a positive light. In this character, the rough, hardworking man is applauded.
Doctor – This doctor knows all about medicine and astronomy. (People in this time believed that the stars and planets affected a person’s physical health). He’s studied all of the important medical minds. Also, he takes care of himself, eating only what he should.
The Wife of Bath – She is not nobility, but she’s privileged (likely like Chaucer himself). She has the best seat in the house at church; no one would dare sit in front of her. She is also a skilled high-quality cloth maker, which is an indication that she’s had a good education, befitting a high ranking household. She has had five husbands, and when she was young, she had a good number of boyfriends, (but the narrator doesn’t want to talk about that now for the sake of modesty). She is characterized as having gap-teeth, wide hips, and a broad red face, which are all references to her interest in romance.
Parson – the Parson is a truly good religious man. He gladly travels far and wide to serve his congregation. He believes that he should lead his followers by setting a good example, that if Church leaders are bad but parishioners are good, then that is bad logic. He taught religion kindly, not roughly. The narrator thinks that the Parson is the best religious leader he has ever met.
Plowman – He is the brother of the Parson. He was a VERY humble and hardworking man. He would even work for free if someone needed his help. He lived like Christ wanted him to live, and he was happy to do.
Miller – The Miller looks like a real tough-guy. He likes to armwrestle, and he also has a very rough-looking appearance (including a nasty wart on his nose with hair growing out of it). He re-sells stolen goods (like corn) at a steep mark-up. His “golden thumb” alludes to the fact that he steals from his own customers, as well. He likes to tell tavern-tales about sin, and he knows how to play the bagpipes.
Manciple - The Manciple’s employers are all lawyers, trained to help others to live within their means, but the Manciple is even shrewder than they are. He is able to manipulate money better than college educated men; he’s never in debt. This, of course, suggests that he lies, cheats, and steals in order to accomplish his financial goals.
Reeve – this man is similar to Ebeneezer Scrooge. He is very cheap and very closely counts money. He has saved a lot of money in his time; he’s a better saver than his lord (noble boss). He (Reeve) was very underhanded; he (Reeve) would loan his lord his (Lord’s) own supplies back to him (Lord). He is very thin and has a rusty sword, which is to show that he’s cheap and is only concerned about hoarding money and supplies.
Summoner – he is not a good man. He is an alcoholic and he is lecherous. He is described as having horrible skin, which is an indication of the evil in him that is bubbling to the surface. He quotes Latin (it seems, in order to intimidate people), but when he is intellectually challenged, it is found that he had no true depth of knowledge. He responds by trying to intimidate people with big, foreign words that they don’t know. In addition, he works in the legal profession and can be bought-off with money or alcohol. Also, since he knows many secrets of people, because of his profession, he blackmails people with this information.
Pardoner – the Pardoner is very similarly in character to the Summoner, which is to say, he has a low character. He is characterized as a liar and a predator of unassuming religious people. He carries with him pseudo-holy relics, and he schemes people out of their money. He is also characterized has having a weak speaking voice, a great singing voice, and a great command of speech/oration (probably why he is able to swindle people out of their money).
Host – the host is the owner of the Tabard. He agrees to judge everyone for who has the best story. Whoever tells the best story will win a free dinner upon their return to Southwark.

Pardoner’s Prologue p170-172

The Pardoner begins by boasting about what a good speaker and singer he is. He says that he’s been at the game of conning people for a long time. (He’s a confidence man, a con artist; it’s best to NOT view him as a real pardoner/preacher. He just pretends to be one to swindle people out of their money. The theme of his sermons is typically “money is the root of all evil,” which is IRONIC, since he’s chiefly concerned with money.

He readily admits that he’s ruthless, taking money from people by sermonizing about these themes: 1) avarice and 2) cupidity. This is IRONIC, since he himself is guilty of these 2 (of the 7) deadly sins. He happily relates how he separates people from their money. He has absolutely zero interest in helping people with his sermons; he doesn’t care even a little bit about their souls. He further expounds that he has zero honor in that he will gladly take money from the poorest people (no honor among thieves).

Even though he admits to being a vicious man, he plans on telling his fellow pilgrims a moral tale. This leads the reader to the concept of UNRELIABLE NARRATOR. Can we believe him? Will his tale be truly moral?

Pardoner’s Tale, p173-180

The tale begins with 3 rough men sitting in a bar, drinking early in the morning. Outside, there is a funeral procession. The men want to know who died, so they as a young boy working there. An old friend of theirs died, DEATH killed him. The innkeeper confirms this. They men are so upset, they tear out of the bar; they want to find Death and kill him. Here, Death is personified as a real person; the rioters aren’t aware of this, and assume that Death is a real, live person (he isn’t).

On the road, they encounter an old man, who is very kind and gentle. The are very rude to the old man and ask him why he is so very old, to which the old man replies that 1) no one has wanted to trade their youth for his old age, and 2) he hasn’t been sick enough to die yet (suicide isn’t a thought here). [Simile: “like a wretched soldier at strife within himself”: Metaphor: Earth = Mother’s Gate] Then, the old man criticizes the men for how they were rude to him because 1) youth should be respectful of the aged, and 2) the Golden Rule, you should do unto others as you would have them do unto you. [foreshadowing: “if you should live till then”]

The rioters don’t react well to the old man’s speech. They say that he is a co-conspirator of Death, that the old man is helping Death kill young people. They demand that the old man tell them (rioters) where they can find Death.

The old man tells them that they can find Death right around the corner, under an oak tree. The men run there and find a pile of gold florians (coins). Once they see the money, they forget all about hunting after Death. They decide to wait until nightfall to take the gold safely away; if someone saw them during the day with so much gold, then they would be accused of being robbers. They will draw straws, and the one with the longest straw will run back to town for food and drink, while the other 2 stay behind to guard the florians.

The youngest of the three chooses the longest straw, so runs off to town to get food and drink. As he leaves, the other two plan to kill him, so that they will have more money for themselves. They will fake a play-wrestling match and both will stab him when he is unsuspecting.

On his way to town, the youngest rioter decides to use poison to kill the other two, so that he will have all of the money to himself; but really the Devil is given credit for the evil thoughts, not the young rioter. He finds an apothecary (pharmacist) who gives him very strong poison; the young rioter lied and had said that he wanted to kill rats and a polecat. He then gets 3 bottles, and fills 2 of the bottles with wine and poison; the 3rd bottle only has wine.

When the youngest returns, the two others stab him to death as planned. Then, they rest and drink the poisoned wine themselves and die a horrible death.

The Pardoner, now having told his tale, tells the pilgrims that they should repent their sins by giving him their money and silver. [apostrophe + anaphora: “O cursed sin! O blackguardy excess! O treacherous homicide! O wickedness! O gluttony that lusted on and diced!”] He tells them that he has the power to forgive their sins. He seems to have forgotten that he’s already warned them in his prologue, that he’s a bad guy who’s just out for money. He tells them that for money he will absolve them of their sins, and he also tries to entice them with his “holy relics.” He ends by suggesting that the HOST go first, since he says that the Host is the most sinful of all of the pilgrims. But, as you re-read the Host’s description in the General Prologue, you see that he’s certainly not the most sinful of the pilgrims, far from it in fact. Why, then, do you think that the Pardoner wants the Host to “repent for his sins” first?

The WIFE OF BATH’S Prologue and Tale

The WIFE OF BATH’S Prologue, p184

This begins with the Pardoner questioning if he wants to marry. He seems to think that women might be too troublesome. The Wife of Bath then tells how she can impart some of her wisdom regarding men and women, wisdom that he should listen to. She also says that in marriage, she was the domineering one, not her husbands. The Pardoner is anxious to hear her advice and urges her on. She is irritated at the Pardoner and his pushiness. She tells him that if he’s quiet, then she’ll begin.

The WIFE OF BATH’S Tale, p186-196

Major Themes include: chivalry, courtly love, magic, male / female dominance, respect for the elderly, the importance of ancestry / lineage, poverty

The audience is told that in the days of King Arthur (chivalry and courtly love, remember these terms), fairies and elves lived and roamed the land. When Friars (the Church), though began to roam and bless the countryside, these magical creatures disappeared. Now (in the late 1300s), the only threat to the virtue of women is the Friar. This seems to be a strong criticism of the morality of some men who served the Church.

Then, we are introduced to the protagonist, a Knight who rapes a young woman. The king of the land wants to impose the death penalty, but the queen and her ladies protest. The queen says that he must find the answer to the following question: What is it that women most desire? If he cannot answer the question in 366 days, then the death penalty will be imposed. He travels the countryside, asking every woman whom he encounters, but he cannot get a consistent answer. Some want nice clothes; others want freedom. Still other women want to thought of as good and honest people, who can keep secrets.

SIDE STORY: The Wife of Bath tells us of King Midas, who had donkey ears, and his wife the queen, who he entrusted with the secret of his ears (he’s ashamed of his ears and keeps them hidden from everyone else). She promises to keep his large ears a secret, but later tells a river about his ears, because she was totally incapable of keeping this to herself. MORAL: Women can’t ever be trusted not to gossip, even about things that are important to their hisbands

The story returns to the Knight. The 366 days are now gone, and on the last day, he comes upon a group of women dancing in the woods. He wants to ask them What is it that women most desire?, but as he approaches, they disappear. A very old woman is there, though. (This is a MAGICAL ELEMENT of the story. Remember, the intro of the tale talked about a time of fairies and elves during King Arthur’s reign).

The old woman tells him the answer, but he must promise to do whatever it is she wants him to do. He agrees upon his honor (ha ha, like he has any honor. . . IRONY! Remember why he got in trouble in the first place), but he doesn’t consider that she might ask him to do something odd, etc. He takes her to court, gives the answer, which is “To be the master of her husband, to have control over her husband.” This answer might not quite be right for a 2010 mindset; equality is a 2010 desire. However, if you contextualize this, given that women in 1380 had ZERO control over their own lives, they had to marry whom they were told to marry, and they didn’t have any career possibilities, this does seem like a reasonable desire. the women of the court think that it is a wonderful answer and he is given his freedom. The old woman now tells the court that he must do as she asks, and it isn’t until this moment that the old woman tells the knight that she wants him to marry her. He is disgusted and argumentative, asking her to reconsider what she is asking. This, of course, is very curious, since young women in Chaucer’s day (1340-1400) always married men who were much older than they were. The Knight is just being asked to do what most women of his day had to do.

Although he complains, they marry. On his wedding night, he has several complaints about why he is too good to be with her: ancestry, poverty, age. She calmly refutes all of these complaints. Then, she gives him a choice: she can be an old yet perfect wife, or she can be a young yet horrible wife. He decides to allow her to choose to be whatever she wants to be (He really must have been listening to the answer to What is it that women most desire?). She is so pleased with his answer that she agrees to be both young and the perfect wife for him.

What is problematic regarding her counter-arguments, is the timeline. The story that the Wife of Bath told is set during the Age of King Arthur, presumably 367-734 AD. However, she quotes Dante Alighieri (1265-1321 AD), and of course he lived long after the action of the Wife of Bath’s tale. Other people whom she quotes include: Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (Philisopher, 470–475? AD), Seneca the Younger (Philosopher and Politician, c. 3 BC – 65 AD), Tullius Hostilius (King of Rome, 673-642 B.C.). While these latter people do fit in the timeline, it raises the question: Would either the Wife of Bath or her character, the old woman, have read and been able to quote these philosophers and writers? Women in this time weren’t typically so literate. At this point, we are dealing with the concepts of Suspension of Disbelief (The readers must “go with it” in order to enjoy the story, even though there are logical discrepancies in the story) and Unreliable Narrator.

The tale ends with a warning to husbands to give their wives whatever they wish. After all, a happy wife makes a happy husband.
