History of Kempner High School
In 1984, Fort Bend county authorized a bond issue that allowed the construction of the fourth high school in Fort Bend county. Issac Herbert Kempner, founder of Imperial Sugar, has contributed much to Sugar Land, and for this the school was named after him. The first Kempner principal was decided by the board on January 11, 1988 to be Mr. Wayne Emerson. He was dedicated to his work and students. The anticipation was over when Kempner opened its doors to the first Open House on August 30, 1988 at 7:30 p.m. The $15,522,300 school contained 55.88 acres of pecan trees, a 750 seat auditorium, and 100 faculty and staff members. In 1990 Kempner graduated its first senior class. When Kempner first opened, the area surrounding it was isolated and mostly agricultural; in fact Highway 6 was only two-laned at the time. In the past years, the school has witnessed growth in both enrollment and suburban change in the surrounding areas. At one point Kempner had 3,000 enrolled students. Kempner serves a diverse population of students who benefit from the strong academic focus and wide range of extra curricular offerings. The students that graduate from Kempner go on to change the world. Students from Kempner have become doctors, scientists, engineers, teachers, politicians, professional athletes and many other contributing members to society. In the 1999-2000 school year, Dr. James May became the new principal following Dr. Wayne Emerson and served the students and staff of Kempner until his retirement in June of 2008. Under Dr. May, Kempner continued its tradition of academic excellence and its reputation as a school for all students. Troy Mooney became the 3rd principal of Kempner High School and served in that capacity until July of 2010. During that time KHS achieved recognition as a Recognized High School from the Texas Education Agency as well as a 96th percentile National ranking from Newsweek magazine. Dr. Anthony Indelicato became the 4th principal of Kempner on July 1st, 2010.

Greetings to all our parents, guardians and community members, Our 2011-2012 school year finished well with our senior class earning more scholarship money than any other FBISD high school. We are so proud of our students! Our campus received many awards and recognition last year which you can read more about by scrolling up this page. This year, we are excited about our AVID Binder Initiative for all 9th graders. More information can be found on our website as we will continue to share information as the 2012-13 school year draws near. AVID is a program that helps students increase their academic success both while in high school and in college. The AVID Binder is one of many AVID strategies we will be implementing building-wide at Kempner this year. Our main focus at Kempner continues to center on student success with an emphasis on preparing our students for success on the upcoming state and national tests- TAKS, STAAR EOC (End of Course exams) and AP (Advanced Placement tests). The new state tests called STAAR End of Course exams (EOCs) are more rigorous than TAKS and are timed. All students who began the 9th grade of high school in the 2011-2012 school year will be taking 4 EOC tests- reading, math, science and social studies. All other students who started high school before the 2011-2012 school year will be taking the TAKS tests. We had more students take AP tests this year as well a 7% increase in the number of students receiving the honor of AP Scholar. I want to thank all our AP teachers, all staff associated with AP, our students and community who helped with these gains. It is great to be a Kempner Cougar with so many students challenging themselves to high levels of academic success! Another focus for our school last year was decreasing the amount of tardies our students had to class. Our new tardy process last year resulted in 66% less tardies than the previous year and so we will continue that same process this year. Thank you to our CHAMPS team and all faculty, staff and students. As always, thank you for your support- we have such a fantastic group of students here at Kempner that we enjoy supporting. Our goals for our students are that they come to school every day, make positive choices and give their best effort so we can help ensure that every student achieves their maximum success and graduates with options for their future after Kempner. Sincerely, Dr. Anthony Indelicato
